Bone Broth Hot Chocolate

You might be thinking “say what? bone broth hot chocolate?!?!” or you may have heard about it, but you’re not sure if it’s worth the hype it’s getting?! I’m here to say yes! It’s a delicious sip for anytime of day, even post workout!
Despite the 100+ degrees just outside my door, this afternoon I was looking for something that would be satisfying and warm but also a nutrient-dense snack. Enter bone broth hot chocolate.
I’ve been making an effort to cut my afternoon coffee habit. Anyone else? It started one weary afternoon during a busier than normal week and has since been a struggle to kick. I often have a cup of dandelion tea, which I love, but was really wanting something a little rich and decadent this afternoon. I was searching my pantry for inspiration when it all came to me. 🙂

In only a matter of minutes, I was reminded of why this is one of my favorite drinks. It also brought me back a handful of years to when I was homeschooling the boys and I started giving them this Hot Chollagen drink almost every afternoon. Its chocolate goodness is another way to pack in some nutrient-dense foods all while tasting like a bonus treat, especially in the morning!
I throw everything in the picture in a small pan, stir until heated through, and it’s ready to enjoy!
I start with 2 cups of filtered water and, once warm, add all the ingredients, then whisk until combined. Once it’s in my mug, I give it a little whip with my frother to make it creamy. I prefer it without milk, but by all means, add whatever type of milk you prefer. I like to add some canned coconut milk to the boys to get some healthy fats in them.
Like I said, this is a nutrient-dense drink, and it fills you like a meal. Here’s a breakdown of the ingredients:
The “broth” I like has 10 grams of protein per serving and adds a subtle earthy flavor when mixed with the chocolate Equip protein powder. Bone broth is beneficial for bone health, joint health, plus skin, hair and nails. It is packed with minerals and electrolytes and great for gut health, which is the key to optimal health.
I used 1 scoop of my Equip protein powder because it’s what I had on hand, but the boys love the Equip Chocolate Collagen for this drink. Both taste great, it’s just a matter of how much protein you want. The powder makes it more of a meal and great for post workout.
Next up is organic cacao powder! Nature’s chocolate. Its deep, rich, unsweetened flavor is divine. It’s rich in minerals, antioxidants and flavonoids (hello cellular health!). It may boost your mood and supports heart health.
I add ceylon cinnamon, aka “true cinnamon”, to practically every.single.thing. It’s my favorite spice and the bonus is that it has some health benefits, like reducing inflammation, and lowering cholesterol, as well as improving blood sugar levels. It is rich in antioxidants, which can help protect our body from oxidative stress!
Last in the mix is a pinch of pink salt. A pinch of salt brings balance to all the flavors. I love Redmond Real Salt because it’s pure pink salt at its finest and from Utah. It’s never chemically treated, but Redmond Pink salt has over 60+ trace minerals and is unrefined, which contrasts with refined white table salt, which often has additives and is stripped of beneficial minerals.
- 2 cups filtered water + 1 sipping bone broth pack (alternatively you can use 1 cup of whatever broth you have on hand)
- 1 scoop (1/4 cup) Equip protein powder
- 1 Tbsp organic cacao powder
- 1/8 tsp ceylon cinnamon
- Pinch of pink salt
- *If using 1 cup of broth as opposed to a broth packet, I would add 1/2 cup of your preferred milk after all the previous ingredients are warmed and combined.
Add filtered water to small pot and bring just to a boil, drop heat to low and add 1 stick of bone broth, protein powder, cacao, cinnamon, and salt. Stir until combined and heated through. It’s at this point that I will stir in milk. Pour into your favorite mug and enjoy! Please comment below to tell me your thoughts after you try this recipe!!
