Taco Seasoning Blend

This seasoning blend came about after years of trying so many different taco seasoning recipes and despite tasting good, I just didn’t ever find one that I wanted to use a second time. One of my goals is to make all my own seasoning blends. We’ve come a long way when it comes to store-bought seasoning packets, but “natural flavoring” is like the “fragrance” of the food world: it can be anything and that just doesn’t work for me.

My schedule was very overloaded recently so I purchased a clean brand of taco seasoning that was on sale and my son didn’t like it! Even though he didn’t like how dinner turned out, it was a win for me! I have been on a mission to show my sons that cooking from scratch is not just delicious, but super simple and versatile.

Soooo, the amount of chili powder vs cumin may be controversial, but one of the reasons that I love making homemade blends is that it’s catered to what we like. I never noticed that chili powder can have some heat, my family on the other hand has a bit of a sensitivity to it. If I’m making this blend for myself, I will use up to 1 full tbsp of chili powder, but if it’s for my boys and/or parents, ½ tsp.

I love cumin and the earthy warmth it adds to dishes. When I make this blend for myself and the boys, I use triple the amount of cumin vs chili powder and equal amounts when it’s for me. I love cumin so much that I put it in my guacamole (gasp!). Who knew it was such a big deal until we hosted a team party and a couple of wives mentioned it. Ha! But I digress!

Here’s the blend:

  • ½ Tbsp (up to 1Tbsp) cumin
  • ½ tsp (up to 1Tbsp) chili powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp garlic salt
  • ½ mustard powder
  • ½ tsp poultry seasoning
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp fine ground celtic/pink salt
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • Dash of white pepper
  • We can’t forget cayenne pepper! Add to your heat preference!

Add the seasoning to 2 pounds of whatever ground meat you prefer. Our favorite is ground turkey! I use this seasoning blend for tacos, burritos, quesadillas and soup.
